Jasper City Council endorses land-use policy changes but will require parking for all new residential development - eviltoast

“To try and build things that involve limited parking or restricted parking or reduced parking makes absolutely no sense to me,” Laurenson said.

This is infuriating to read… :(

There is a lot of research showing mandatory parking actually drives housing prices up:

https://www.vtpi.org/park-hou.pdf

Basically, Jasper is making it illegal ❌ to build an apartment/home without parking 🅿️.

In other words, new home buyers are indirectly forced to pay for parking. Even if they are 100% okay with buying an affordable home/apartment that doesn’t including parking.

Basically, mandatory parking requirements forces people to pay for the cost of car ownership, even if they just want a roof over their head.

Mandatory parking is one of the many reasons why Los Angeles housing is so expensive:

But imo Jasper is a special case because it’s inherently car dependent because of it’s location.
