Chicago Weekend Eats? - eviltoast

Anybody visit some good restaurants this weekend? I was able to check off a few restaurants I have been wanting to visit for a while now:

  1. Au Cheval - went to Small Cheval before but finally caved and waited for their burger. Honestly not the biggest burger fan but this was overall a really nice burger. The bacon was amazing. Don’t know that I’d go out of my way to grab it again though. Likely I’d go to small cheval if I am really craving a good burger but if you’re already in west loop and going to grab drinks before dinner definitely worth putting your name down.

  2. Rubi’s on 18th - was in the area and decided on tacos, had a Carne Asada taco and an Al Pastor both with blue corn tortillas. Their tortillas are made to order and delicious! The salsas were phenomenal as well especially the salsa verde. I preferred the Asada while my GF preferred the Al Pastor. Both were really good though.

  3. Monster Ramen - had their summer special a spicy shio ramen and it killed. One of the best bowls in the city no doubt. Made with limes and sesame and was the perfect amount. Noodles were awesome as well. High five ramen holds a special place in my heart though but its pretty close. Different types of ramen so no tonkotsu there but their shio was definitely the best shio I have had.

How about you? Any good meals this weekend?

Au Cheval is nice but damn do they make you wait! I’ll be adding Rubi’s and Monster to my list.

I finally tried Phodega on Ashland. I got the Beef Pho, my partner got the chicken Bahn Mi, and we shared an order of fried pork dumplings. To close out the meal we got some of their house-made Ube cookies and those were tasty and a lot of fun, ube seems to be having a moment.

Everything was pretty good but the dumplings stole the show, almost wish I had just gotten 2 orders of those. I got the beef Pho because it’s their signature dish but I’m not sure id get it again, it was a little boring and flat and those meat balls were FIRM. It wasn’t bad, just not exciting, there were definitely better things on the menu.

Next visit I’ll be trying their chicken fried rice.
