Am I lucky with this kind of workplace culture? - eviltoast

I currently work at a company where work does not feel like work because of my colleagues. For context, I’m fairly young (26M). My workmates are around the same age range. Most don’t have families yet, so outside of work none of us have major responsibilities or things that would keep us majorly busy.

I always look forward to being in the office. We mess around quite a lot during downtimes. We have random dinners together and most of these evolve (or devolve lmao) into after hour drinks – sometimes even taking a sick leave the next day due to not being able to get enough sleep the night before. We’ve gone on multiple vacations together and met most of each other’s parents. It is very reminiscent of college / uni life.

This is not to say that we’re no-lifes and do our jobs poorly. We’re all leads and we handle the security of major local and international corporations. When it’s work time, it’s work time – everyone implicitly respects that.

Some people who have left our companies have kept in touch due to the genuine friendships that have been formed. They mention that this kind of culture is hard to beat and is one the greatest assets of our company.

The pay though is subpar when compared to industry standards. It’s not low, but I could be making more. I am not planning to leave just yet, but I can see all this being a major factor in my decision making in the future.

Is this kind of culture something that’s common in the industry? One thing I am dreading is actually hating my coworkers and not looking forward to interacting with anyone by the time I choose to switch jobs.
