Hi, I’m moving my family away from gmail primarily to stop supporting the uber-rich and mega-corps.

Requirements:

• access via webapp
• ios access via apple mail (yeah, yeah, the hypocrisy. one thing at a time)
• some way to import 25+ years of emails
• custom domain name
• no connection to large companies

Nice-to-haves:

• not us-based. We live in the us and although journalist-level privacy is not something we need, I think even rudimentary privacy may no longer be possible here.

I’m creating this post to ask if you see any errors in my selection analysis. Here’s where I’m at.

Proton - out. Uses google for parts of security, allowing them to collect metadata.

Posteio - out. No custom domain names.

tuta.com - out. No IMAP so won’t work with apple mail. Otherwise would’ve been top pick.

mailbox.org - in. Meets criteria. German, so I’m not positive about privacy.

runbox.com - in. Top pick, just barely. Norwegian.

I’m geek enough to learn about these things and make changes, but I don’t have that much knowledge about the details of email hosting.
