Is there a solution for people who want to use something like rcs but won’t download Google Messages? I can’t get everyone I know to switch to something like Signal and I won’t use Google apps

I researched this a little while ago. The new protocol is licensed by Google and has not been released to the public. Also, unless everyone in the middle supports the protocol, messages are routed through Google’s network.

I settled on Signal for people who will switch and SMS for the rest. I do plug Signal when I can, like sending images between Apple & Android are degraded, but not on Signal.

Don’t use those banks. Why are you staying with a bank that has terrible security practices?

Next your going to tell me you pay ATM fees as well.

EDIT: lol what’s with the down votes? If you don’t like your banks practice, don’t use that bank. Being complicit and allowing banks with shitty practices to be your bank only makes it easier for them to not change.

A bank is a choice. You can always choose a different bank.

Obviously it doesnt bother you that much if your willing to stick with that bank.

You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about; a real Dunning Kruger.

There are many places where every bank uses SMS for 2FA…

Relax homie don’t pop a blood vessel. I know it can be frustrating to realize you have to take some personal responsibility for your privacy.

You don’t have to use a bank at all, you opt for a credit union or a host of other options.

The irony in you invoking the dunning-kruger effect when all you have probably done is read the wiki page gave me a chuckle.

As someone who’s banked with a credit union before: we still just call it the bank and they have all the same issues normal banks do with shitty tech support

If someone wants the ability to bank in person at all then it can be incredibly difficult if not impossible to find a bank that doesn’t have shit IT

You get more freedom with online only banks (what I use now) but those also come with tradeoffs like cash being much more annoying to use

I’m not saying its easy or convenient but users here love to complain about issues while being complicit. I just find that annoying.

My main bank is sunsetting allowing users to have a hardware token (they only offer it to users without a smart phone now) and is forcing users to either use a proprietary token app or SMS. Did I just accept that? No. I made my voice heard and got an exception made and now I use a hardware token as my 2FA.

People need to realize, privacy requires some personal responsibility. Complaining on Lemmy isn’t enough.

For some concerning reason; Fwy can’t even find the YouTube version of this video without manually concatenating the video ID to the watch page of fwy’s personal invidious instance. Please, make sure the video is searchable if it’s intended to be live.

An invidious link; this one will take you to public instances so you can find one that’s up and running.

    https://redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=B9BWXvn-rB4

Fwy’s own instance, unfortunately, isn’t public; it’s only shared with fwyfwy housemates on a VPN solution.

Yes, the link on the site has a typo at the end: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9BWXvn-rB4s. Seems like YouTube will correct it automatically though, which is probably why it wasn’t caught.

(Besides, if you don’t want to use YT, why not go with the PeerTube one?)

What human being has sent an SMS message in the last decade? Obviously I’m being a bit facetious, but seriously I don’t think I’ve sent a text since mobile internet stopped being pay-per-MB and the only ones I receive are automated.

My plan still is pay per MB (well maybe per GB). So yes, of course I use SMS. Besides, what alternative is there? No one has the same apps.

Wow, surprised anywhere still offers that. Is it normal for your country or just a particularly good deal for you?

what alternative is there? No one has the same apps

Use any of the alternatives depending on who you need to message. Most of the people I want to message are on Signal and I still have WhatsApp for the rest.

My Ting plan is about $30 per month, unlimited talk and text for 2 phones and including the first block of data we usually need. Data is billed combined at something like $5 per GB, so we really prefer to stay under 1GB which is the first block.

Yes, it is a good deal. Less than half what many people pay. I could afford to buy 10GB of data for the cost difference and that is often the limit on many “unlimited” plans.

Edit: Hence we keep our data off by default. To chat, someone would need to text me to meet on an app.

Folks, it being hard to get people to switch from SMS to a more secure messaging platform is not a critique of the video.

Everyone knows its hard, its why videos like this that explain the benefits in simple terms is a useful tool.
