I’m a staunch atheist who likes a holiday.
Jesus was most likely born in the spring or fall a few years earlier than we recognize, if he was even a single person or existed at all. The Church, as it did every time, took existing holidays and co-opted them.
The end of the Roman calendar year is an amalgam of pagan holidays that celebrate the shortest day/longest night. A lot of the traditions we associate with Xmas are celebrating the beginning of the lengthening of the day and the return to life/springtime.
Xmas has always been a meta holiday. Most are. Enjoy the company of friends and family just as people have for millenia, no matter what banner is hanging over the mantle.

Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Erasing a Home’s Risks on Zillow Doesn’t Make Them Go AwayEnglish23·2 days ago“Displaying the probability of a specific home flooding this year or within the next five years can have a significant impact on the perceived desirability of that property,” Art Carter, chief executive officer of the California Regional Multiple Listing Service, a private database for real estate brokers and agents, told the Times.
Yea, no shit. That’s the point of including climate risk when it comes to choosing a property.
Flood prone areas don’t pop up overnight. The people in Swannanoa NC were living in a known floodplain that had a massive flood about 100 years ago. Same with the Guadalupe River that averages a major flood every decade. Climate change is making these events larger and more frequent, but excluding data from a real estate listing to supposedly increase home value is nonsense at best and fraud at worst.

10·14 days agoWatching Alien when I was a kid gave me nightmares that lasted decades, long past the time when horror movies actively scared me. I was fully aware of all of the aspects of movie making, I was in school for film, knew everything it took to make the original film and STILL would have nightmares. It dug into my hind-brain and didn’t let up.

There are 2 images of ‘the evolution of man’ on this page. The 2nd one seems close to what you’re asking for.
I’d remove the existing wood, grade the soil flat and compact it. I’d then put down 2 in foam board (like in the link above) to decouple the flooring from the Earth. I would pour concrete to match the subfloor in the rest of the basement, but you don’t have to. You can go back with a pressure treated subfloor product on top of the foam, etc.
A few things to keep in mind would be making sure that you get the right height of the soil so that you have the finished flooring height you desire. Also, all this work assumes you are maintaining access to that clean out. Good luck.
Where are you building? I’m assuming this is the basement or the ground floor. What is the rest of the subfloor on that level?
Wood resting on dirt is a big no, so that is an obvious red flag. Whatever floor you put in, I’d preserve your access to that clean out. Once you answer my Qs above, I can help give you a recommendation.

Climate - truthful information about climate, related activism and politics.@slrpnk.net•Bari Weiss vs. climate change | At The Free Press, Weiss consistently rebrands tired fossil fuel talking points as courageous, rebellious dissent.English5·28 days agoDINO? LINO? One of those is correct.
Nolan’s Batman film repeated a line that didn’t land with me at the time but I have since understood: “it’s not who you are, it’s what you do that defines you.”
At the time, I thought myself a temporarily embarrassed progressive, thinking all these good thoughts and waiting for my sleeper-cell handler to activate me. I’m a good person, I am ready to do good when the need arises, as long as I have nothing else scheduled that day.
But the malaise of the socially progressive 90s lulled me (and other Gen Xers) into a false optimism that things were just going to get better on their own. Our brains were also cooked by decades of deregulation propaganda. And TVs were getting bigger and cheaper, so who were we to complain?
Weiss is the next generation of this detached ideology. She’s been simmering in absurdism and pageantry so long that I don’t think she has a handle on what she really wants to do. I’m not excusing her behavior, but I can’t devine a coherent platform for her. I’m not sure any of her contemporaries actually have one, either. Just for the grift? It doesn’t make them less dangerous, but hopefully it makes them less intimidating for those of us who have felt the tap on the shoulder to enlist.
In conclusion, she sucks, she says inane things. Don’t be surprised but also don’t roll your eyes and move on. Find what you can do, no matter how small, and do it. You will instantly be steps ahead of the performative competition.

Rewatching DS9 and then listening to The Delta Flyers commentary. I don’t always A/B the episodes, I usually just watch a few to refresh my memory then listen to a few of the podcasts as time allows.
