Gaming@lemmy.zip•Raspberry Pi prices rise again, along with a new 3GB Raspberry Pi 4 announcedEnglish
4·6 days agoThere is a 16GB one too. It sells for like $300 right now though. As for what you can do with it, one use case would be running something like Proxmox with a few VMs. Myself though I’d rather stick with my N100 system which is also x86.

homeassistant@lemmy.world•What's the best way to detect when I'm taking a shower?English
2·6 days agoI would go for a simple humidity sensor. You just need to do a bit of data collection first to get a baseline of “what taking a shower usually looks like” and then based on that create the automation.
The only problem with that is that depending on how accurate you want it to be, you may have to wait a while to take a few measurements until it triggers the automation.
For something like mood lights I would just use a ZigBee switch if I’m being honest though.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Privacy centric devices stateside for low cost?
8·8 days agoThe answer is to get a used Pixel. With a bit of looking around you may be able to find some pretty good deals. The Pixel 8a is the sweetspot is my opinion. OEM minimum support until May 2031 and old enough to find at a very good price. But not that old for its battery to very likely be busted.
Same here, Debian since Squeeze. A couple of years ago I just decided to go a step further and go with Kicksecure. Which is basically just hardened Debian.
You mean create a new user profile? Just follow the instructions here, that is how it works on AOSP and all ROMs that don’t diverge too much from it. Then just keep TikTok and only TikTok there, so it doesn’t have access to the rest of your data.

Technology@lemmy.zip•New Company Hopes to Build Age-Verification Tech into Vape CartridgesEnglish
12·9 days agoIke’s solution is to leverage blockchain technology in the chip on the e-cig cartridge. It would use a camera to scan some form of ID and then also take a video of the user’s face. Once it verifies your identity and determines you’re old enough to vape, it translates that information into anonymized tokens. That info goes to an identity service like ID.me or Clear. If approved, it bounces back to the app, which then uses a Bluetooth signal to give the vape the OK to turn on.
I just cannot begin to describe how stupid this is. You know what? I’m not going to even try.

3·9 days agoIf you don’t want to use a VPN like Tailscale (or ZeroTier) then this is exactly what the Home Assistant Cloud is for. And it even has an 1-month trial.
SimpleLogin, Mullvad, Ente, Notesnook, Aegis, Bitwarden, ProtonMail… and fucking TikTok. Come on man, all that effort to improve your privacy and then you go and install literal spyware on your phone? At least isolate it on its own user profile if you really have to.

2·12 days agoI just want Skyrim where I can have actual conversations with NPC, instead of them repeating the same lines over and over again.
I do however want this to be powered by a local LLM running on my machine. Especially single player games like this need to be self contained, and not have to rely on a server for basic gameplay features like this.

Android@lemmy.world•Android is making it harder to install unverified APKsEnglish
11·13 days agoIf you expect regular users to go through with this ridiculous process you are just naive. Anyone who distributes their app through something like F-Droid will either, have to choose between going through with giving Google their ID or lose 85% of their users, if they are lucky.

Android@lemmy.world•Android is making it harder to install unverified APKsEnglish
21·13 days agoYes, you do. Unless you are developing an app just for your friends, or you expect everyone not on a custom ROM to go through the ridiculous “advanced flow”.
In addition to the advanced flow we’re building free, limited distribution accounts for students and hobbyists. This allows you to share apps with a small group (up to 20 devices) without needing to provide a government-issued ID or pay a registration fee. This ensures Android remains an open platform for learning and experimentation while maintaining robust protections for the broader community.
The above is from the official update by Google.

For anyone who wants an open source alternative GNOME Mahjongg is actually pretty good.
