Not sure where you got that from. I try to buy Canadian where possible and my complaint was that US is trying to hide the fact the products are American. That’s it. I’d like to be informed where I’m getting my stuff from.

Our cats still get American cat food, our son love fruit and if the option is US or nothing we’ll get him some and find something else for ourselves. Given that China builds most things that’s impossible too. I bought a Nintendo Switch in 2017 and most of that is from China.

What really pisses me off is half the stuff we bought in our last shopping trip says “Product of Peru” or “Product of Mexico” on the front, then you flip the blueberries over and it has a US distributed by address on the back. I’m doing my best but they’re making it harder to spot.

That’s quite a question… I have 2 phones with different numbers.

My main phone with the number I give everyone to text/call me lives at home plugged in 100% of the time. SMS/MMS are bridged into self hosted Matrix. Signal, WhatsApp are also installed and bridged into matrix. Calls are forwared to a 3rd number with VoIP.ms.

The phone I keep on me has data only. I can still call and send SMS from the 2nd number but it’s expensive. I use a matrix chat app to send SMS/MMS/Signal/WhatsApp messages. I use a VoIP app for calls.

I have signal on my data only phone as a just in case to message/call my wife if things are down. I also thought I’d be a good idea to put notifications in signal as that’s my backup chat app.

ETA: the reason I do this is so I can call, text, or messages from any device that has internet. I travel outside of Canada I just need a data sim or WiFi and I can call/text as normal using my normal cell number. I also hate using cellphones. If I’m at work and need to reply to an SMS, I have a keyboard and I want to use that, not some small screen.

I’d probably just stick with Ubuntu for now and mess around with desktop environments. Personally, I don’t like Gnome. KDE might be alright for a win 10 replacement. XFCE is windows xp like. The list goes on and on.

As long as everything works (WiFi, sound, etc) then you can use the UI and get use to CLI tools.

I host a matrix chat server with signal bridge and hit the matrix API to send messages. Basically the same thing but more hops. I might set that up too.
