Depends on how much you’re making. This guy has probably been below the poverty line the whole time he’s been in this country. If he’s been making less than the Basic Personal Amount income tax credit that anyone can claim, he wouldn’t be paying any tax even if he’d been doing everything by the book and above-board. If he wasn’t very far above it, he’d have been paying a pittance—probably less than he was paying out in sales taxes for everything he bought over the course of twenty-odd years.

If the government had paid for the restoration out of tax money, it would have become a political football. 24 Sussex isn’t a national icon the way the White House and Buckingham Palace are in their respective countries, it’s just a house that happens to be set aside for the Prime Minister to live in. That means that a large swathe of the population would see any significant tax money put into repairs as, in effect, embezzlement of public funds by the Prime Minister (or, if they didn’t to start with, they’d be talking about it that way by the time the Opposition was done speechifying about it). Which is why we’re in this situation to begin with.

There was no good way to handle this, just several bad ways. At least they picked one instead of kicking the can down the road again.

My distro’s package manager will quite happily install all of those. From the main distro repo, even. I don’t see any reason why I would mess around with flatpaks or other distribution methods.

I can literally count on one hand the pieces of non-game software I use that are installed from outside my distro’s package manager (there’s three if you include the inkscape plugin to drive my vinyl cutter).

So I repeat, this is either a distro issue or related to how you, personally, prefer to manage your system. It is not a general Linux issue.

A quick skim indicates that they’re talking about heavily-cut nonstandard localizations and some kids’ series that weren’t any good the first time around. None of these are classic or groundbreaking (there was kids’ anime on North American network TV before them), they’re just old and mishandled.

True, Linux did solve this decades ago. And then made it significantly worse in the last decade with multiple package managers (apt-get, AppImage, Flatpak, Snap, brew, random .sh install scripts etc.). Remembering how a Linux application was installed and calling its update command is a chore, and updating will probably pull in some other 500MB+ dependency that’s not shared with other apps because of a minor version change.

If your distro is forcing you to use more than one package manager on a regular basis, you need to switch distros.

If you’re choosing to use 3-4 package managers simultaneously, even though you don’t really need to, that’s on you.

Either way, it isn’t Linux’s fault.

This is something of a mixed bag so far.

They spend more than 75% of the first episode setting up the main character’s generic Japanese household and school, something which could (and should) have been done in less than half that time, since it seems like a lot of it isn’t going to be relevant.

Then right at the end, things start to get more interesting and it looks like we might end up with a human-resistance-fighting-aliens story, which was not quite what I expected from the teaser blurb, but could be entertaining. Or not. With the protagonists being so young, it’s hard to tell what age group they’re trying to pitch this to, and that may end up affecting how good this ends up being more than anything internal to the story.

The low-end Chinese vehicles are cheaper. These are not them, and I don’t expect we’ll be seeing them this year. So what?

And the Chinese data is probably better protected from everyone except the Chinese government than the American data is. So I’d bet that the Chinese government has the data collected by American cars too, if they’ve decided they want it—they just aren’t the only people who’ve got it.

For what it’s worth, the waste canvas is available in other than 14-count (one of my usual suppliers has 11, 14, 15, 18) if that’s a concern for you. The soluble canvas seems to be very difficult to find in other than 14-count. (I have no personal experience with either.)

None of the characters grabbed me, so given how oversubscribed this season is for me already, this is probably a drop.

Seriously? You’re invoking argumentum ad popularum (which is a logical fallacy to begin with) in a discussion of linux technical details? That’s so illogical I can’t even.

'Cause the old ones are falling apart, pretty much, and we want to maintain a minimal capability that isn’t dependent on someone else’s goodwill.

(As for making them at home, we never have, as far as I can tell from a brief skim of the government’s history of naval submarines. We’ve always gotten them from somewhere else, usually the UK or the US.)

systemd is a monolith in practice, despite what its advocates like to claim. You can’t run just a part of it under another init without doing extra patch-up work (see elogind). Whereas you can run just one GNU utility on top of, or even alongside, someone else’s implementation of that or other utilities (for instance, in parallel with a rust implementation that isn’t quite ready for the big time yet).

systemd also won’t work on anything except Linux. Older solutions also worked on BSD. That matters to some people.

And the issue was never just Poettering’s employers. He had a bad reputation in parts of the Linux community long before systemd—he was also the main force behind pulseaudio, which was shipped long before it was ready for actual use in the real world and remained in a semi-broken state for quite a long time afterwards. And he often comes across as personally obnoxious. Nothing like telling someone “I’m not interested in fixing your issues with my project” (except less politely) to get them to adopt your code.

It’s kind of like the OS version of putting Doom on everything and anything.

So it’s not serving the bottom-feeder market for effectively disposable Windows laptops.

Why should it need to? Serving a niche interest is perfectly valid as long as you’re making enough money at it to be self-supporting. Despite what the line-go-up-at-all-costs advocates think.

North Korea? Since there wouldn’t be any point in wasting resources on them.

Nah, the entire series is only around 500 hours of footage. Plus maybe another 50-60 for the movies and various spin-offs.

Long anime series are treated a bit differently than North American live action productions. One Piece will most likely continue being made as long as there’s manga to adapt. (Whether the mangaka will finish the story, drop it abruptly to do something else, or die of old age with it still incomplete is another question.) The only other thing that might kill it is if the studio making it folds, but as far as I know Toei is relatively healthy.

At ~1170 episodes, One Piece isn’t even close to being the longest-running anime series airing in Japan today. I don’t think it’s even in the top five.

Sexist garbage. Worst thing I’ve seen so far this season. Apparently in this show’s universe, a woman has value only if she’s a man’s demon’s appendage. Hard drop.

With Linux, in the worst case, you can probably find a dev who’s willing to take your money to maintain a feature. Might not even be that much money, depending. Windows? Not a chance.
