The entire games industry, and software development in general, is unstable right now. The few companies that are still stable aren’t hiring. If you have a job, you try to keep it. Because trying to get a new job will be an absolute nightmare. I’m in that situation myself right now.

Yeah, I think I know what happened here, as I just searched “Steam TOS” and this site came up, simply titled “Terms of Service”, which includes almost the same passage. But that’s actually the TOS for the game “Rec Room”. So it looks like search engines are screwing that up, making specific games’ TOS look like Steam’s TOS.

Aber irgendwie wundert es mich nicht. “So rein musikalisch nicht meins” erlebe ich irgendwie viel zu oft als verstecktes “irgendwie schon ganz schön schräger Kram, aber ich will auch nichts dagegen sagen, weil ich sonst als nicht so tolerant rüberkomme, wie ich mich gerne gebe.”
Für mich geht es eher darum, niemandes Musikgeschmack beleidigen zu wollen, weshalb ich da eine respektvolle Formulierung verwende. Ich würde mir diese Musik nie freiwillig anhören und würde sie im Radio sofort abschalten, aber Toleranz heißt ja nicht dass ich alles mögen muss. Wenn andere Leute das mögen ist das vollkommen ok.

Ist aber eben auch reine Interpretation der TAZ dass die Reaktion auf ein konservatives, geschocktes Publikum zurückzuführen ist. Romaji won’t get you far, as you’ll essentially be illiterate. When you’ve learned Kana and some Kanji, sentences also become way easier to decipher as you’ll see the difference between particles, nouns, conjugations at a glance, whereas it’ll look like a complicated mess in Romaji. Learning Kanji is also super useful, as you’ll be able to have a very good guess at a word’s meaning and pronunciation without having learned that particular word before. I’d say spending a year or so on just learning Kanji really made the biggest difference for my ability to understand Japanese. As a bonus, it’s also a great starting point for learning Chinese. So I agree, if you want to go anywhere beyond learning stuff like “Arigatou Gozaimasu”, you should stop relying on Romaji as soon as possible.
I think laws could be used to put some stronger responsibilities on the parents. Unfortunately, some of them don’t care whether their children are on social media or what they do on there at all. So when something happens to a child who was too young to join social media, parents would bear some responsibility for that. Guidance is great, but not everyone will take that offer. I’m not in favor of abolishing the minimum drinking age (which is 14 here btw) either.
Notably none of the questions they asked were about age verification though. I support a minimum age for social media too, but I don’t support age verification measures.
Yeah, I don’t disagree. As of now this is just one person with an issue out of an unknown number of Steam Machine owners. It shouldn’t be blown out of proportion.
If I was that person though, I’d probably ask Valve for a replacement unit, even if it works for now.
