I mean like in a wide generalized way. I didn’t mean every single person on the planet feels the same way.

That’s a very good thing to differentiate. I learned something new today. Thank you.
While I’m not arguing that plants are most certainly not cognitive in any way similar to other forms of life, we are learning more about the life around us every single day. We as a species used to believe that animals in general did not feel emotions, stress, or even really pain in the same ways we do, and yet time and time again, as we learn more, we learn that the truth is far more complicated than we thought.
It can also be argued that our own emotions are governed by chemical reactions and electrical synapses. If we’re arguing that chemical reactions are not emotions or thoughts, then it could be argued that humans are also not sentient creatures which is clearly not the case.
Regarding what plants experience and how they experience it, the real answer is that we do not know all of the information yet. We may never have all the information.
That doesn’t mean that studying it is a needless distraction. Imagine what we could learn if it turns out to be more complicated. We could use that to potentially produce more food more reliably. Although that’s all firmly in the realm of speculation.

2·16 hours agoI appreciate the compliment. I tend to really only see my mistakes whenever I make something so I can’t really enjoy it. I started taking pictures of my work after I finish because I usually end up giving it away or throwing it out. I got a handful of pics of stuff I made, but I’ve never kept a single actual piece of my work. I just don’t like it. Other people seem to enjoy it so I figured I’d post something here.
Plants do communicate and experience sensations. I would not call that comparable to human intelligence or full on sentience, but dismissing a fact as a destruction because it might be inconvenient is a bit reductive. Scientific facts help us understand the world better and ideally, make our lives better off. Discarding inconvenient information is not going to help us.
It’s not like plants being able to feel things is going to stop us from eating or using them. We know for a fact that animals think and feel, even if not on our level, and we still have no qualms about eating them.

But I’m not joking. Like sign me up for a fresh hot’n’ready bomb with extra napalm please. I have wanted to die for years, have tried to do it myself many times, but there’s too much bitch in me to do it. This country is absolutely fucked anyway. If Iran ever put up a public service for America called “Bomb to Table Delivery” I would be the first person signing up.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it ok to say I love you without conditon?
17·12 days agoIt feels extremely weird to say it but I can get behind this kind of attitude. We need more of this. I love you too.
She knows what you did last summer.
Me perfectly safe at home because I am too paranoid, and reclusive to ever visit a theme park where large congregations of people gather - …

581·17 days agoI’m shocked more people don’t realize this. There is absolutely nothing broken with the system. It’s working exactly as intended. The suffering of the lower classes is the desired outcome. If we’re too tired, desperate for enough resources to survive, and too afraid, we won’t be able to stand up for ourselves and demand something better.
And unfortunately it’s working spectacularly.

Gives me oxtail vibes. And my god do I love oxtail.
I would absolutely fucking buy drinks from a fire breathing lesbian bartender.
Just eat the notebook. Page by page, boil the cover to make it palatable, absorb its nutrition, absorb its power! Poop out the remains. Return them to the original owner. All problems are neatly solved and the blood is washed cleanly off your hands.

Yea I was using we in a wide sweeping generalization. I didn’t mean every single person on the planet feels the same way. It was not my intention to imply that every human gleefully eats animals and has no problem with it. I apologize.
