  • My (soon to be ex) bank recently decided to make everyone use their ID card number which can be obtained from many sources and does not change, a username with symbols and numbers and minimal length requirements which cannot be changed and a 4 digit pin code. No 2FA at all, so its only saving grace is that you get locked out at 3 tries.

I’m guessing they are trying to align everything to their legacy ATM pin code system instead of making the ATM system better.

  • Yeah, I’m waiting for the same thing, and even if they cut off their services, so long as the phone can be degoogled and replacements installed I wouldn’t really care.

Banking apps could be the only problem I foresee, but then I guess I’ll just go back to debit and credit cards.

Also, if someone releases a working Linux phone with some extra polish that has actual global distribution that would also be a good option for me.

  • Well, I’m just starting so for basic grammar and vocabulary Nihongo con Teppei is what I’ve been listening to, mostly to reinforce and expand upon what I’ve seen during classes and what I’ve read from Tae Kim’s grammar guide.

I would say he makes for decent listening because he is native, but he can get a bit chaotic later on as he corrects himself mid sentence.

For streams so far it’s been mostly Japanese vtubers who speak slow enough to sort of understand what they are talking about, but that has been mostly to train listening and pay attention to the pronunciation and cadence of words when a native speaks. I’m nowhere near understanding many of their sentences due to a ton of missing vocabulary. They act more as a benchmark of progress.

I recommend picking any that talks about topics you understand already, uses standard dialect and does not have a motor mouth. There’s enough indies with niche content over there that there is a chance you might find one that appeals to you.

The timezone makes it super rough to catch any livestream so for now looking through archives and finding ones about something you know and find interesting is useful.

  • You also get the same issue with trans men. We a had a local case where a trans man was convicted of a crime, and the local authorities decided to send him to a male prison, respecting his self-identification. He proceeded to immediatly challenge this through the courts for obvious reasons.

In this situation, it’s impossible to escape the drawbacks of your biology so long as prisons assume a dichotomy. And the vast majority of the population considers any criminal to be subhuman anyway, so asking them to acommodate a sub-percentage of what is already a tiny 0.1% of the population is impossible. They would sooner vote to just execute them to save themselves the hassle and expense.

  • In the Chinese Room scenario, cards with Chinese written on them are inserted into a box.

Inside there is a man who doesn’t understand Chinese but has a lookup list of which symbols to write as a response to every possible sentence you can write on the inserted card.

For anyone observing from outside the box it looks as if whatever is in the box is fluent in Chinese and can hold a conversation. But the man inside does not understand anything about Chinese.

This is used as an analogy to explain that machines, very much like the man in the box, do not actually understand the data they are fed, nor the data they output, no matter how human the response might seem.

It was an argument against the Turing test, which is about whether machines showing behaviour indistinguishable from a human is a sign that they can think.

The Chinese Room argument is that they must also show understanding of the data itself, rather than just human-like responses, to say that they think.
