My wife once played a Wizard with the Hermit background, and decided that the “secret she knew” was that she was a character in a game. She would periodically make references to older rule sets. Yes, THAC0 was name-dropped.

    Image Transcription:

    Format: Tumblr posts

chandra-nyalaar says: “my favorite d&d thing is when someone flubs like a really obvious perception roll or something and the DM gets to be like ‘well, you’re pretty sure you’re in a room but you could be wrong.’”

animar-smol-of-elephants says: “it is either really wet of really dry, you’re not entirely sure”

ugin-the-spirit-dragon says: “One time a guy in our party rolled a nat 20 on a perception check, but there was nothing around he didn’t already see, so the DM said ‘You’re not quite sure, but for a few seconds it seems like you’re standing on a giant’s table, surrounded by 5 giants.Your party seems to look stiff and fake, and large papers and dice are strewn around you. Then, everything goes back to normal.’”

So, transcriptions should be separated by a line break whenever there’s a new major section, like the beginning of the transcription after the title, between Tumblr posts (not between comments), etc. That means hitting enter twice for a new line (only hitting it once doesn’t fully separate them), then typing “—”, then enter again twice. It should look like this.

If you’re still confused, click the 3 dots and then hit “show raw text”, if that’s an option on the platform you use.

Every section of text should be separated by pressing enter twice. This includes any paragraph breaks in the text, any new replies or comments transcribed, or when you’re writing the body of the message after you write the username. The transcription should read as similarly to the image as possible.

The format goes right after the image transcription line, usually in italics. So “Image Transcription: Tumblr post

Usernames should be written in bold (two asterisks on either side), and placed above the text block, separated by two enters. You don’t need to write “says”, it’s implied! (It doesn’t say “says” on the original image either, but we still know what’s going on, right?). Here’s an example:

          BornVolcano

You’re doing amazing, keep it up! Transcribing can be more complicated than it looks!

Remember, screen readers read text by selecting each block of text and jumping between them as you select. By putting the username above the text like that, the user can jump between the name and the text to have a smoother experience in understanding it.

          A few basic tips:

          • Descriptions of visuals should be written in italics INSIDE square bracks (don’t include the brackets in the italics). Example:

[There is a large purple dinosaur with orange polka dots dancing the tango alone under a spotlight]

          • Replies to comments should be written as embedded quotes, with an empty quote between the username and the text body, using “>”, “>>”, etc. Example:

          User 1

          This is a comment

          User 2

This is a reply to that comment

          User 3

This is a reply to User 2

          • The ToR (transcribers of reddit) subreddit has lots of tips and formats for transcriptions on the info bar of the subreddit, I’d recommend checking it out! The discord is super friendly, too, I go on there from time to time for transcription help. Just be sure not to include the official ToR footer!

Just wanted to give you some tips to help you along the way! You’re doing great, thank you for helping make things more accessible!

Me neither haha. I just use the ToR Tumblr format. But I’ve also been transcribing for over two years and I’ve done over 100 of them (70 on reddit, Lemmy uncounted). So it’s just second nature to me by now

I run a multidimensional (Sliders-like) campaign, and every time the players do a transit they are given a momentary glance at another reality. My personal favorite of these has been:

For a moment you’re all sat around a table. The smell of pasta and garlic hang strongly in the air. You have this sensation that, while you’re here, you’re family. Someone one sets down a basket of bread sticks… and you arrive at your destination.
