Didn’t like the kid at first. Too much of a kid. Immature.

Then I started watching him race, and the kid was good. Kid was cool under pressure. Kid had a shoe. Kid was resilient. Kid was not really a kid.

No one on the grid deserves a first win more. Happy for him.

I’d like to see Hulkenberg get one before he retires.

Lots of battles the entire race and then it finishes with that final stint. Great job from Lando.

Super happy for Lando but his win sort of confirmed a thought I have been having

At the time of the restart, Max was right on Lando… Lando barely managed to keep the lead and then, little by little took off… in 20 laps he accumulated a 7+ second lead and, more importantly, at no point did it seem Max was able to shorten that lead

    The thought/question I have is:

Are the F1 rules making it being #1 easier than being #2 or further down the line? I know some rules which make no sense to me, like getting both DRS and Blue flag when lapping cars (IMO, it should only be DRS)

Currently, Max normally takes the lead on the first turn and then becomes impossible to catch… I was assuming it was part of Max’s magic dust… but Norris just basically did the same (had he taken the lead from lap 1 he may have accumulated the same 20+ crazy seconds Max has been)

IMO, being in the lead should be either same or actually a bit harder than not… it would make races SO MUCH MORE FUN… kind of like the board game King of Tokyo… you need to be in Tokyo to get points to win but doing so makes you prone to attacks and you cannot heal, this makes it impossible to just move to Tokyo and park there until you win.

Lando barely managed to keep the lead and then, little by little took off… in 20 laps he accumulated a 7+ second lead.

Lando pitted under the safety car and had fresh tyre on and due to a mistake none of the other cars were allowed that luxury(pitting under a safety car window).
Norris and Max talk about it, in this clip: https://youtu.be/Nq82CB-zOto

In case that clip gets copyrighted The reporter asked Norris: Would he have been able to win without a cheap pitstop and fresher rubber.

Norris replied: It would have been difficult, because then he would have to keep Max, Leclerc and Oscar(all on fresh tyres) behind.

at no point did it seem Max was able to shorten that lead

Max hit the bollard at turn 15 and picked up some damage( I think), also he had issues with grip especially on the hard tyre. Max talks about the grip issue in the post race interview.

I know some rules which make no sense to me, like getting both DRS and Blue flag when lapping cars (IMO, it should only be DRS)

In my opinion, if you remove blue flags for the leader, then you’re just asking for this to happen time and again. No one wants to get lapped and these kind of moves will be made.

I disagree with you. My understanding of Formula 1 is that it pays (literally the prize money) to be the leader and rest of them want it they have to either catch up or concede. Either its design and development, aero, engine or upgrades, whichever team gets it done first and fast should win and get the money.

Sure, I get Lando got lucky but still… it’s not like Max had 20 lap old tires, the difference was super small. I do not recall anything about damage from the bollard (I’d be surprised if he did and no-one mentioned it in the race)

And yes, Max did mention he had a hard time on Hard tires once… but regardless, my point is that once you get to first, it seems too easy to keep it

In my opinion, if you remove blue flags for the leader, then you’re just asking for this to happen time and again

Fair, then they should get the blue flag and not DRS… why get DRS to help pass a car that is mandated to let you pass? Honestly, if there were just harsher penalties for stupid moves like the one Ocon made for lapped cars vs regular spots that would probably solve the issue

I do not think people will crash all the time without the blue flag though… it doesn’t happen too often when it “counts” (as in someone actually losing a spot that matters), I doubt all F1 drivers would just be as petty as Ocon was then.

I disagree with you. My understanding of Formula 1 is that it pays (literally the prize money) to be the leader and rest of them want it they have to either catch up or concede.

Precisely… why make it easier to keep the lead? and the reason why I think we shouldn’t is: entertainment. Too many races turn to car parades where nobody can pass each other. Even Miami was getting really boring until some lucky VSC and SC events switched the line up and that was just luck… otherwise, we were watching many cars within DRS still unable to pass each other… and this is not Monaco hehehe

In any case, thanks for taking the time to reply. Your answer gives me a better perspective on the matter
