OceanGate's cofounder wants to send 1,000 people to a floating colony on Venus by 2050, and says we shouldn't stop pushing the limits of innovation - eviltoast

Guillermo Söhnleinm told Insider he has wanted to make humanity a multi-planet species since he was 11 years old, and that OceanGate was part of that ambition.

As long as all of them are billionaires, then I think I’d be okay with it.

Why Venus? It’s completely uninhabitable. I learned that when I was probably around 6 years old. Billionaires need to stop considering themselves scientists just because they can pay people to make them look smart

Venus has some things going for it, like a relatively earth-like gravity of 8,87 m/s² (about 90% of earths) , an atmosphere blocking radiation and being relatively close to earth . The proposed colony would float in a part of the atmosphere that is less hot and dense than the surface. It still wouldn’t be very useful, you can’t utilise the resources on the surface. And it would be obviously very risky.

To be fair atmospheric pressure on Mars will be far more forgiving to their submarine than bottom of the ocean.

The atmospheric pressure at the surface of Venus (the topic of the article) would be much worse than the bottom of any Earth ocean, so you better not let your floating Venus city accidentally succumb to gravity.

Can’t even safely reach the titanic and wants to go to a literal hellhole of a planet that has absolutely no benefit for humanity.

    OceanGate

Yikes I don’t know what this name reminds me of more, Watergate the scandal or Heaven’s Gate the death cult.
